Chanute is located in the Flint Hills of western Kansas, and is located just east of the Wichita metropolitan area. Chanute is the county seat of Sedgwick County.

As with most cities in Kansas, Chanute has a hot, dry climate with average highs around 100 degrees Fahrenheit and lows in the 40s. Chanute averages more than 320 days of sunshine per year.

Chanute is less than 45 minutes from Wichita, the state's largest city, and about an hour from Topeka, the state's capital.

Attractions in Chanute include the Chanute Air Force Base, which is home to the 311th Air Control Wing and the 355th Air Mobility Wing; the Sedgwick County Historical Society Museum; and the Chanute Military Museum.

Additional attractions in the area include the Flint Hills, the Wildlife Habitats of the Flint Hills, and the registered historical sites of Fort Hays and Scripto, both of which are located just north of Chanute.

Weather in Chanute is usually hot and dry, with occasional thunderstorms in the summertime. Eastern Kansas is especially susceptible to severe weather, and Chanute residents should be prepared for a variety of weather conditions.
