Cedar mountain is located in the Central Appalachian Mountains in eastern Kentucky, just south of the border of Tennessee. The city is on the South Fork of the Whitewater River, and is the second most populous city in Mason County after the county seat of Williamson. The city's population was 9,867 at the 2010 census. Cedar mountain is the principal city of the Cedar Mountain Micropolitan Statistical Area, which encompasses all of Mason County.

Cedar mountain is part of the Nashville-Davidson–Murfreesboro–Columbia, TN-KY-IN Combined Statistical Area. Cedar mountain is also part of the Knoxville–Blountville–Nashville, TN-KY-IN Combined Statistical Area.

The racial makeup of the city was 96.08% White, 0.10% African American, 2.73% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.19% of the population.

There were 3,572 households out of which 30.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.9% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.96.
