The city was once known as the "Apple capital of the world" due to the large number of orchards and farms located in the city. Caney City is home to the Ellis County Fairgrounds, the largest county fair in the United States.

The city is located in the southwestern corner of Ellis County and is bordered by Ellis County to the north, west, and south, and Kaufman County to the east. The 2010 census reported that the median income for a household in the city was $37,634, and the median income for a family was $51,261. The per capita income for the city was $21,002. Caney City was named after the Caney River, which was named after the Creek Nation village of Caney Creek. The town of Caney was established in 1879, and the city of Caney was established in 1910.
In 1921, the town of Caney held its first city elections. A group of citizens who opposed the election of Edmond Brown as mayor gathered outside city hall and shot at the newly elected mayor, wounding him and two of his supporters. The mayor was taken to Houston for medical treatment, where he died. The city was subsequently re-elected without incident.
