Calverton is located at 38.11003 degrees north, -77.57711 degrees west. It has a total area of 5.1 square miles (13.8 km2), of which 2.3 square miles (6.1 km2) is land and 2.8 square miles (7.7 km2) is water.

The city is bisected by the Calverton River. The eastern and western portions of the city are separated by Lake Barcroft, which was created in 1961 by the construction of the Barcroft Dam.
