Bruning is situated at the junction of U.S. Route 14 and Nebraska Route 283, and is about halfway between Omaha, Nebraska and Sioux City, Iowa. The population was 15,356 as of the 2010 census.

Brunning is known for its historical significance as the first city in Nebraska Territory. The city was founded in 1855 and was originally named "Otoe County." The city was renamed Bruning in 1890 in honor of John Bruning, a Nebraska Senator who championed territorial expansion.

Brunning is home to Eastern Nebraska Community College and the Bruning Civic Center. The Civic Center is home to the AHL (American Hockey League) Sioux City Musketeers, the former home of the Omaha Lancers and the current home of the Omaha Storm Chasers.
