It is located in the southwestern corner of the state, about halfway between the cities of Columbus and Cincinnati. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,649. Brookville is the home of Brookville University, a private, Methodist-affiliated university, and the Montgomery County Community College.

Brookville was founded in 1802 by David Brook, Judge of the Ohio General Court. The city was laid out in the then-fashionable federal grid pattern. Brookville was incorporated as a city in 1818.
