Bowdon is located in southeastern Oklahoma, on the high plains of the Great Plains. It is bordered by Guthrie County to the north, Garvin County to the northeast, and Cleveland County to the east and south. The city is situated in the northeast corner of Cleveland County, at the junction of U.S Routes 75 and 270. Oklahoma City is located to the west and Lawton is located to the northwest.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , of which is land and is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 3,035 people, 1,252 households, and 793 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,151.4 people per square mile (443.4/km²). There were 1,390 housing units at an average density of 507.1 per square mile (195.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.33% White, 0.27% African American, 3.27% Native American, 0.21% Asian, 1.13% from other races, and 2.76% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.19% of the population.

There were 1,252 households out of which 31.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.2% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.6% were non-families. 30.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.92.

In the city, the population was spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 96.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $27,584, and the median income for a family was $35,625. Males had a median income of $27,083 versus $18,750 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,126. About 12.3% of families and 17.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 27.2% of those under age 18 and 10.1% of those age 65 or over.
