Birchdale, also known as Birchdale City, is located in the state of Michigan. The city is situated in Osceola County, approximately 60 miles southwest of Ann Arbor. According to the 2010 census, the population of Birchdale is 9,285. The city is the county seat of Osceola County.

Birchdale is located in the Flint Creek Valley and is bordered by Marshall to the south, Mio to the northwest, and Thayer to the northeast. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.78 square miles, of which 9.53 square miles is land and 0.27 square miles is water.[2]

The climate in Birchdale is generally warm and humid. The average annual temperature is 49.7 degrees Fahrenheit. The average annual rainfall is 46.4 inches. The city receives significant snowfall in the winter. The highest temperature recorded in Birchdale was 104 degrees Fahrenheit on July 12, 1936, and the lowest temperature was 21 degrees Fahrenheit on January 4, 1911.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 9,285 people, 3,573 households, and 2,711 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,401.7 per square mile (554.7/km²). There were 3,743 housing units at an average density of 568.5 per square mile (217.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 96.5% White, 0.5% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.5% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.5% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.

There were 3,573 households of which 36.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.4% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.7% had a male householder with no wife present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 13% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.01.

The median age in the city was 36.7 years. 26.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.8% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26.7% were from 25 to 44; 27.5% were from 45 to 64; and 14.5% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 47.7% male and 52.3% female.
