Bethania is located in northwestern Ohio, in the SW corner of the state, bordered by the counties of Lake and Greene on the west, Mahoning on the south, and Trumbull on the east. The city is traversed by the Tuscarawas River and is close to the following major metropolitan areas: Cleveland, Dayton, Columbus, Toledo, and Akron.

Bethania lies within the humid continental climate region. Summers are typically hot and humid with occasional thunderstorms, while winters are mild with occasional bouts of extreme cold. The highest recorded temperature was 105 degrees Fahrenheit, and the lowest recorded temperature was -8 degrees Fahrenheit. The average monthly precipitation is 37.22 inches, with a yearly precipitation of 146.59 inches.

The city of Bethania was platted in 1837. The first courthouse was erected in 1839. The city was named for Princess Bethania of Greece and Denmark, the daughter of Constantine I of Greece.

Bethania is home to the Greene County Fair, which is the largest county fair in the state of Ohio. The fairgrounds are open every Thursday through Saturday through September, and November through March. The fair is also home to the Ohio State Fair in August.
