Beltsville is a city located in Prince George's County, Maryland. It is located east of Washington, D.C. and north of Baltimore. According to the 2010 Census, the population of Beltsville was 39,271. Beltsville is part of the Washington metropolitan area. The city and its surrounding areas are home to numerous research and development organizations and is also the home of the Naval Research Laboratory.

Beltsville is located in eastern Prince George's County, between the Eastern Branch of the Anacostia River to the south and the Washington Beltway to the north. The city is bordered by Bowie to the west, Hyattsville to the northwest, and College Park to the northeast. Capitol Heights, a primarily African American community, is located to the east.

Beltsville experiences a humid continental climate, with hot and humid summers, cool to cold winters, and moderate rainfall. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Beltsville has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps.

Beltsville was founded in 1788 as a small farming community on the eastern side of the Potomac River by Thomas Walker and a group of Marylanders. In 1812, during the War of 1812, the Battle of Bladensburg was fought in the vicinity of what is now Beltsville.

A Lutheran Church and burial ground, now operated as the Old Lutheran Church & Cemetary, were present in the area by 1796.

In 1827, the community became known as Beltsville, after the Beltsville Agricultural Society was founded to promote agriculture and improve the local economy. Beltsville became the seat of government for Prince George's County in 1840, and prospered as the county seat until 1851, when the county moved to Hyattsville.

Beltsville has had a long association with naval research and development. The Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), which is part of the National Institutes of Health, is located in Beltsville. The NRL is known for its work in submarine engineering and acoustic research. Other prominent research institutions in Beltsville include the National Academy of Science's laboratory for atomic and molecular physics, the Institute of Electronics, Photonics and Nanoengineering, and the Food and Drug Administration's Frederick L.
