Most people know that sunset is the time when the sun goes down. But did you know that the sun doesn't actually set? Instead, Earth rotates into darkness, giving us the illusion that the sun is setting. So what causes sunset?
Well, it's a combination of things. The Earth's atmosphere scatters sunlight in every direction, but blue and violet light are scattered more than other colors. This is why the sky is usually blue during the daytime. As the sun gets lower in the sky, the atmosphere becomes thicker and more dense.
This scattering of sunlight happens to a greater extent, and we see red and orange light more than blue and violet light. That's why sunset is usually a beautiful red or orange color. So next time you see sunset, remember that you're actually seeing Earth rotate into darkness!
Beltrami, Minnesota is in Saint Louis County and is located in the Midwest region of the United States. It is bordered by Saint Louis County to the north, by Clearwater County to the east, by Clearwater County and Polk County to the south, and by Iosco County to the west. The city has a total area of 47.92 square miles (124.68 km2), of which 47.84 square miles (124.52 km2) is land and 0.12 square miles (0.30 km2) is water. Beltrami is situated at the junction of Minnesota Highway 14 and Minnesota Highway 99 and is just west of Interstate 94. The closest states and capitals are Saint Louis, Missouri to the north, Iowa to the east, Minneapolis to the south, and Alexandria, Minnesota to the west. The city's population was 8,812 in the 2010 census, making Beltrami the 59th largest city in Minnesota. Beltrami has many lakes, forests, and hills. Beltrami is home to numerous lakes, including Lake Beltrami, Lake of the Woods, and Skinner Lake; forest areas include the Clearwater National Forest and the Chippewa National Forest; and hills include the Beltrami Hills. The city is also home to the Saint Louis County Historical Museum, which is located in the old courthouse building. Other major landmarks in Beltrami include the Rockport Lighthouse, which is located on the eastern shore of Lake Superior, and the Cliff House, which is located on the western shore of the lake. Beltrami experiences a humid continental climate, with very cold winters and warm, mostly humid summers.

Of course, not all places on Earth experience darkness at the same time. Near the equator, the sun sets and rises almost directly overhead. This means that there is less of a difference between daytime and nighttime. Closer to the poles, however, the sun stays low in the sky for much of the year. This leads to longer periods of darkness during wintertime.
