The Seneca River forms the city’s eastern border, with the city of Cortland on its western border. The Southern Tier region and the Finger Lakes region are both located to the north and west of Beaver Dams.

The city is located in the middle of the watershed of the Seneca and Cayuga Rivers. The town is divided into two sections by the railroad tracks, with the commercial center located on the north side of the tracks and the residential area on the south side. The Cayuga River forms the city’s southern boundary.

The area that is now Beaver Dams was first settled in the 18th century by the Mohawk people. The town was platted in 1811 and was originally known as Dewey’s Corners. The town was renamed Beaver Dams in 1817 in honor of General James Beaver, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as governor of New York.

The town’s economy is based primarily on agriculture, with crops grown in the rich soil of the Finger Lakes region. There is also a small industrial park located in the city.
