Bear city experiences a humid subtropical climate, with average temperatures in the low 70s during the day and falling into the low 40s at night. The summers are hot and humid, while the winters are cold but generally not too severe. The closest state capital is Charleston, located just over 100 miles to the south, while the nearest major city is Roanoke, located just over 150 miles to the south-west. The town has a population of just over 5,000, making it one of the small towns in the US that does not experience significant population growth.

The town is home to a number of attractions, including the Bear City Mining and Historical Museum, which is housed in the restored county courthouse and features exhibits on the town's coal mining history, as well as the Cheat Run Battle casualties museum, which tells the story of the battle between Confederate and Federal troops that occurred nearby in 1862.

The town is also home to Bear Mountain State Park, which offers a number of hiking and biking trails as well as a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.
