Originally called Baughville, Barrett City was established in 1857 by John and Susannah Barrett. The city developed around the rail depot, which served the cattle drives moving north from Kansas. The townspeople were cattlemen, merchants, and miners, and until 1924 Barrett City was the terminus of the Chisholm Trail.

Today, Barrett City is a small town with a population of just over 2,000. The city is locally known for its cowboy heritage, and is also home to the Barrett County Courthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Barrett City is located in northwestern Texas, just south of the Oklahoma border. The city is traversed by the Fort Worth and Denver Railway and is situated at the base of the Davis Mountains.
