Bala Cynwyd is located in central Montgomery County at (39.870958, −75.548998). It is bordered by the city of Philadelphia to the north, east, and west, and by Bryn Mawr to the south. The city is bisected by the Penn Valley, a valley that stretches from Philadelphia to the Susquehanna River. The western border of Bala Cynwyd follows Union Avenue, which forms the eastern border of Bryn Mawr College.
The downtown area is on the eastern bank of the Penn Valley, with the Pennypack Park, Union Landing, and the historic studios of KYW-FM and WWDJ-FM on the western bank. The city extends eastwards along the valley, reaching Warwick Road before curving south to County Line Road and then west to Lancaster Avenue.
