Atomic City is located in the center of the United States. It is bordered to the north by Franklin, the town in which it is located, to the east by Hays, to the south by Liberal and to the west by McPherson. The history of the city of Atomic City is closely related to the discovery of nuclear energy. In 1945, scientists at the Radiation Laboratory in Berkeley, California, discovered that nuclear fission could be used to create power. The decision was made to build a nuclear plant in the area and the city of Atomic City was founded in 1946 to serve as the headquarters for the plant. Construction of the plant began in August of that year and the first nuclear rolled out of the factory in July of 1947. The plant was later renamed the Atoms for Peace plant and operated until 1988.

Since the closure of the plant, the city of Atomic City has experienced a period of urban decay. In the late 1990s, the city began a redevelopment program that has led to a resurgence in the city's economy.
