Atlas was originally settled in the 1830s by fur traders and was originally named Happy Valley due to its mild climate. The city was later renamed Atlas in 1914 in honor of the Titan of Atlas, which is located nearby. Atlas is located in central Missouri, just south of the state line with Arkansas. It is the seat of Audrain County and has a population of just over 30,000.

Major tourist attractions in Atlas include the Table Rock Overlook, the Reynolds String Quartet Museum, and the Morrison Museum. The closest states and capitals are St. Louis, Missouri and Springfield, Missouri, respectively. Major highways in and around Atlas include Interstate 55 and U.S. Route 67.
