The city is located east of Downtown Los Angeles and overlooked by the Angeles National Forest and the San Gabriel Mountains. It is bordered by the cities of Valencia, Pomona, and Menifee.
The city was incorporated on April 18, 1903. Arroyo Hondo is derived from the Spanish word arroyo, meaning stream or small river.
The city is located at 33°3′09″N 117°49′27″W / 33.635°N 117.801°W / 33.635; -117.801 (33.635674, -117.801).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 73.2 square miles (185.9 km2), of which, 72.5 square miles (183.5 km2) is land and 0.7 square mile (1.9 km2) (1.02%) is water.
Arroyo Hondo has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csb" on the Köppen climate classification system.

The racial makeup of Arroyo Hondo was 62,696 (59.6%) White, 5,673 (5.1%) African American, 2,940 (2.8%) Native American, 18,582 (17.7%) Asian, 330 (0.3%) Pacific Islander, 20,708 (19.8%) from other races, and 5,135 (4.7%) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 42,985 persons (41.8%).
The Census reported that 106,111 people (99.8% of the population) lived in households, 342 (0.3%) lived in non-institutionalized group quarters, and 127 (0.1%) were institutionalized.

So by the time the sun finally dips below the horizon, darkness has already begun to fall.
