Ancram city, located in western New York, is the largest city in Steuben County and the 22nd largest city in New York State. The city was named after Ancram Rock, a prominent mountain that looms over the city. The city's population was 45,554 at the 2010 census. Ancram is the principal city of the Greater Rochester metropolitan area, which had a population of 1,277,025 as of 2010.

Ancram is located in the east-central part of the state, at 41°7′N 78°10′W / 41.1271°N 78.1856°W. It is bordered by the city of Rochester to the north, the town of Henrietta to the east, the town of Canandaigua to the south, and the towns of Greece and Spencer to the west.

The city is part of the Finger Lakes region, and is drained by the Oswego River, which rises in the Tug Hill Region of central New York and flows southeastward through the city and into Ontario County before emptying into Lake Ontario.

The city is mostly rural, consisting of rolling hills and subdivisions with small urban areas. The closest large cities are Rochester to the north and Syracuse to the south.
