Anadarko is located in western Oklahoma at the intersection of I-40 and US-377. The city has an area of 27.6 square miles and a population of 102,045 as of the 2010 census. Geography Anadarko is located at the junction of I-40 and US-377 in western Oklahoma. It is bordered by the city of Tulsa to the northeast, the town of Anadarko to the south, the city of Lawton to the south and west, and the town of Bartlesville to the northwest. The city is connected to Tulsa by the Vivian Expressway. The city is also bordered by the OU campus to the north. The rail line from Tulsa came through the city in 1881, and the city became an oil town as early as 1910. The population reached its peak in 1950 with a population of 228,345. The population decreased gradually due to the oil decline of the early 1970s. The city reached its present population in 2010. Economic activity and history The economy of Anadarko has been based on oil and natural gas production. During the early 1970s oil production slumped, and by 1985 only 20% of the original oil production remained. However, natural gas production continued to increase, and currently makes up 40% of the city's income. The city is also home to Marathon Oil Corporation, Muskogee struck Oil, Tudor Exploration Company, and many other smaller companies. Education There are two public universities in Anadarko, Oral Roberts University and the University of Oklahoma. The city is also home to private schools, including IMG Academy, Norbertine Abbey, and the Oklahoma School for the Deaf. Health care The city has a high concentration of healthcare providers, including Mercy Health System and Catholic Health Initiatives. The city also has a hospital, a cancer center, and several clinics.
