Alviso city is located in the south-central portion of Santa Clara County, California. The city covers a total area of 6.37 square miles, making it the smallest city by area in Santa Clara County. Alviso is about 9 miles south of San Jose and about 37 miles west of San Francisco.

The city is part of the South San Francisco Bay Area, which has a population of over 1 million people. Alviso is also adjacent to the San Francisco Bay Area city of Fremont.

The city’s geography is varied. It is bounded to the north by the southern border of San Mateo County, to the east by the eastern border of Santa Clara County, to the south by the Calaveras Valley and to the west by the Union Pacific Railroad tracks.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the City has a total area of 6.37 square miles, of which, 6.31 square miles is land and 0.12 square miles, or 2.93%, is water.

The city experiences a Mediterranean-style climate with cool, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The average annual temperature is 47 degrees Fahrenheit. The highest temperature ever recorded in Alviso was 111 degrees Fahrenheit on July 4, 1976. The lowest temperature ever recorded was 18 degrees Fahrenheit on December 25, 1899.

The population of the city was 20,223 as of the 2010 census, which makes it the sixth most populous city in Santa Clara County and the most populous city in the South San Francisco Bay Area. As of the census of 2000, there were 20,315 people, 6,704 households, and 5,382 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,492.2 people per square mile. There were 7,276 housing units at an average density of 821.8 per square mile. The racial makeup of the city was 55.05% White, 3.10% African American, 0.57% Native American, 13.75% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 10.25% from other races, and 4.55% from two or more races. 25.76% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 6,704 households out of which 36.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.1% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.3% were non-families. 22.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
