The city has a history dating back to the 1850s, when it was known as Bear Valley. It was renamed Altamont in 1892, after the Altamont Pass, which is located just to the east. The city grew slowly throughout the early years, but began to experience rapid growth in the 1960s and 1970s as a result of the development of the Kohl's Department Store chain, as well as the construction of the Altamont Pass (I-5) and the Fontana Freeway (I-580). Altamont is now a commuter town, with many workers commuting to the larger cities to the east and the north.
