Akutan, located in the North-Eastern region of the United States, is the capital of the state of Alaska and the tenth largest city in the US. Occupying an area of 8,479 square kilometers, Akutan is bordered by the Kuskokwim River to the south, the Izembek National Wildlife Refuge to the west and the state of Alaska to the east. This leads to longer periods of darkness during wintertime.
