Adolphus, Iowa is located in Pottawattamie County, Iowa, and is part of the Des Moines metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city's population was 2,393.

Adolphus is located at 41°4′13″N 93°53′53″W. It is situated on the east bank of the Des Moines River, about southwest of Des Moines and about north of the Illinois state line.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of , all of it land.

The first white settlers in the Adolphus area were H. C. and L. G. Prehn, who came in 1851. The Prehns operated a small farm and hired sharecroppers. The town grew slowly until the early twentieth century, when the Pottawattamie County Fairgrounds and the construction of the Minneapolis, West Branch and Southern Railroad led to an influx of settled families and businesses. In 1906, the railroad established a depot and town called Adolphus. The name was chosen in honor of Prince Adolphus of Sweden, who was popular at the time.

Today, the city is a prosperous and growing community. Adolphus is home to a number of businesses and is the commercial center for the rural area around it. The city has a number of parks and recreational facilities, and its residents are active in community service and politics.

Adolphus has a humid continental climate, with warm, very occasionally hot summers and cold winters. The city receives a fair amount of precipitation, which tends to fall in brief, heavy showers.
