The city is located in the heart of the Inland Empire and is adjacent to San Bernardino and Riverside counties. It is bordered by Palm Desert to the east and northeast, Hemet to the south, and Victorville to the west.
The city is located just east of the Colorado River, which forms the western border of the city. The Colorado River forms the eastern border of the city, dividing it into northern and southern sections.

Adelanto has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate, with cool temperatures in the winter. There were 41,471 housing units at an average density of 1,000.3 per square mile (398.3/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 76.8% White, 2.2% African American, 1.4% Native American, 13.4% Asian, 0.6% Pacific Islander, 2.6% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 12.5% of the population.
There were 38,969 households out of which 32.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.5% were married couples living together, 10.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.4% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.13.
